Who is Mehmet Celebi?
02 April 2020Considered to be the second founder of the Ottoman Empire, Mehmet I or Çelebi Mehmet, son of Beyazıd I, was the fifth Ottoman Sultan.
He would show the justice he had shown against his Muslim subjects, also against his non-Muslim subjects. Celebi Sultan Mehmet completed his education at the Bursa Palace. Later, he was appointed as the governor of Amasya sanjak by his father.
The greatest desire of the young sultan was to recapture the lands that were under Ottoman rule during the time of his father, Yildirim Beyazid. He worked hard for this desire and succeeded.
He is a descendant of his mother, Devlet Hatun Mevlana. Therefore, Mehmet I and his brothers adopted the nickname Celebi. Celebi Sultan Mehmet died on May 26, 1421 at the age of 42 in Edirne. His funeral was then brought to Bursa and buried in the Green Tomb.
