The Bedroom by Vincent van Gogh
04 April 2020One of the most famous and most effective painters of art history Vincent van Gogh was born in 1853 in Holland. Van Gogh painted only during the last 10 years of his 37 years of life and completed almost 200 paintings in total. Van Gogh, who practiced landscapes, still life, portraits and self-portraits, laid the foundations of modern art with his bold colors and specific brushstrokes. Although Van Gogh started to paint with his brother Theo’s persistence, he lived a life full of solitude and failures, many years after his death, almost all of his works were placed amongst the world’s most expensive works.
Van Gogh, who still guides the style of art today, painted his personal favorite masterpiece The Bedroom, also known as Vincent’s Bedroom, in Arles in 1888. In a letter to his brother Theo, Vincent explained what had provoked him to paint such a picture: he wanted to express tranquility and bring out the simplicity of his bedroom using the symbolism of colors. Thus, he described: "the pale, lilac walls, the uneven, faded red of the floor, the chrome-yellow chairs and bed, the pillows and sheet in very pale lime green, the blood-red blanket, the orange-colored wash stand, the blue wash basin, and the green window", stating "I wanted to express absolute repose with these different colors".
