Monet, who has depicted the port of Le Havre with the sun rising in blue-green tones, painted this work from the window of his hotel room in 1872. The orange light tones of the sun reflecting onto the sea create a contrast with the dull and foggy blues, shifting the focus to the sun.

This artwork, made in a brand new technique according to its age, has become an ideal example of impressionist painting with the reduction of the color, the mastery of brush strokes and the reflection of visual impressions by using two contrasting colors.
